Chris and Neil each prepared a CD for a release in the 'Back To Mine' series in which musicians and DJs compile a sequence of their favourite tracks for "after-hours grooving". There had been 19 releases in the series including CD's from, New Order, Faithless, Underworld, Groove Armada, Carl Cox and Danny Tenaglia. 'Back To Mine: Pet Shop Boys' is the 20th release in the series and it's a double CD release, one CD of Chris's choices and one of Neil's.
In an interview Chris said, "It's the first compilation of other people's records we've ever done and the last, I think. I don't think we will be making a habit of it. We'd never actually been asked to do one before, and when 'Back To Mine' offered it to us we said we'd do it, as long as we could do one CD each, with no compromises being made. They'd never done that before but they agreed so for that reason we decided we'd do it. Also I didn't want to do a chill out compilation because I'm not really a chill out type of person. I think mine's probably the first one of the series that's not really a chill out."
The artwork is a one off and is created by the Pet Shop Boys long standing designers Farrow, and despite looking very Pet Shop Boys it also maintains Back to Mine's illustrated theme. A special anniversary package was also designed to house both CD's.
The album lasts for 120 minutes and has 27 tracks, 10 from Chris and 17 from Neil which cover a variety of genres, electro, disco, rock, gospel, ambient, pop and classical. Chris and Neil both give intodutions to their CD on the sleeve notes. This is Chris's, "Welcome to 'Back To Mine'. I've chosen a few records to play. Songs about love, friendship, sex, religion, hope and despair. Starting with early 80's electro and Italian disco, through rock, gospel and ending with classic Dusty. Hope you enjoy it. Peace and love." And this is Neil's, "My idea in compiling this collection was to create a sequence of music for late-night listening, linking electronic, ambient, classical and pop music. It's the sort of music I enjoy in the couple of hours before sleep. Thanks to Jon Savage and Micheal Bracewell who have introduced me to a few of the artists represented here."
