18th December 2012 - Neil On The Radio

Neil recalls his stint, from Christmas 1982, on pop's most successful magazine, 'Smash Hits' on Radio 4 on Thursday 20th December 2012 at 11.30am in a programme called, 'Neil Tennant's Smash Hit Christmas'.
Neil had a life as a journalist before he became famous as a Pet Shop Boy. In fact, it was on a 'Smash Hits' trip to New York that he had his big breakthrough with the record producer Bobby O. Here, 30 years after his first stint on pop's most successful and inventive magazine, Neil recalls the golden days of Smash Hits. On this programme you hear from founder and legendary magazine maker Nick Logan, editors David Hepworth and Mark Ellen, writers Miranda Sawyer and Sylvia Patterson, and from regular 'Smash Hits' cover girl, Toyah. They also sample a rare recording from the 1982 Christmas Flexidisc (a message from the stars) and probably Neils first recording - the music for a trailer advertising 'Smash Hits' stickers.

6th June 2012 - Afisha Picnic Festival 2012

The Pet Shop Boys will be headlining the Afisha Picnic Festival 2012 in Moscow, Russia, on Saturday 21st July 2012. This will be the full 'Pandemonium Tour' production for (probably) the last time as a new Pet Shop Boys tour is planned for early next year with a completely new production.
From the Afisha press release: "Pet Shop Boys, the British electronic duo and one of the most successful and influential pop band of the last three decades, will be the headliner of Afisha Picnic Festival 2012. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe will be the closing act of festival's Main Stage and their performance will surely become the culmination of this year's Afisha Picnic and one of the greatest events in the festival's history.
"The Afisha Picnic is a one-day outdoor festival held in Moscow, Russia every summer. It takes place on the territory of Kolomenskoye, a former royal estate, now a state-owned historical, architectural and nature reserve museum. Over the last 8 years it has gradually become the main musical and cultural event of the summer in Moscow. This year's line-up will include Franz Ferdinand, Mika, The Drums and Little Boots, Aquarium, F* Buttons and the headlining set of the Pet Shop Boys will certainly make this year's Afisha Picnic the best and the biggest event of Russian festival summer of 2012.
"It can be said that Pet Shop Boys have a special relationship with Russia or at least Russia have a special relationship with Pet Shop Boys. Their single 'Go West' became one of the musical symbols of Perestroika and of course many Russians had seen the video for 'Go West' as a visual metaphor of what was happening to the country at the moment. Not so long ago Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe composed and performed the music for the seminal Soviet film 'Battleship Potemkin'. Every Pet Shop Boys' show in Russia is always a much anticipated event." For more information, visit the Afisha Picnic Festival official website.

21st March 2012 - Eric Watson 1955-2012

The Pet Shop Boys' are very sad to report that their friend and collaborator, Eric Watson, has died after suffering a heart attack on Sunday 18th March 2012.
Eric was a brilliant photographer who worked extensively for 'Smash Hits' magazine in the first half of the 80s and took the first shots of Pet Shop Boys in 1983. Over the next few years he photographed Neil and Chris many times, including the covers for the single releases of 'Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)', 'West End Girls', 'Love Comes Quickly', 'Suburbia', 'It's A Sin', 'What Have I Done To Deserve This?', 'Rent', 'Heart', 'It's Alright', 'So Hard', 'Jealousy' and 'DJ Culture' and the album covers of 'Please' and 'Behaviour'. In 1999 he returned to photograph Neil and Chris for the cover of the single, 'I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Any More' and the CD booklet of the 'Nightlife' album. Eric also directed many classic PSB videos, including 'West End Girls', 'Suburbia', 'Domino Fancing' and 'DJ Culture'. When Pet Shop Boys first recorded 'West End Girls' with Bobby 'O' in 1983, Eric played it to an A&R man at Epic Records who then signed it, resulting in Pet Shop Boys' first single being released.
Aside from his work with the Pet Shop Boys, Eric created images and videos for many other pop artists and his landscape photographs were exhibited at the Blue Gallery in London in 1997. His work was also included in the exhibition 'Icons Of Pop' at the National Portrait Gallery in London and a selection of his photographs of the Pet Shop Boys was exhibited in the same gallery to coincide with the publication of the book, 'Catalogue'.
Originating from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Eric moved to London in the early 70s and studied at Hornsey College of Art. In recent years he taught photography. He will be much missed by his family, friends, students and all those who appreciated his work.
I was lucky enough to be contacted by Eric about seven years ago about creating him a page on my website. For more information of his work, visit Eric Watson's official website.
