The Dakota people, including the Lower Sioux, Upper Sioux, Prairie Island and Shakopee tribes, have lived on the banks of the Upper Mississippi River and the lakes of Minnesota for centuries. After many years of struggle these first nation people were recognized as a tribal government in 1969.
As part of working to overcome economic struggles Norman Crooks, who was the Shakopee Tribal Chairman, introduced High Stakes Bingo in 1982 and opened Little Six Bingo. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed in 1988, and allowed tribes to negotiate with the state of Minnesota to offer different casino games. The Longstreet Hotel, Casino, and RV Resort was opened on 1 April 1996 and is named after Andrew Jackson Longstreet, who was affectionately known to Amargosa Valley locals as Jack. He was a frontiersman, and married a Paiute woman from the Valley.
Jack was respected by Native Americans and Western settlers alike in this part of Southern Nevada, and often worked with miners and ranchers over his lifetime. He was also a merchant and a barkeep at different points, and lived in a rock and adobe house that he had built himself. Continue reading
Miccosukee Resort and Gaming, Florida
The Miccosukee Resort and Gaming is a hotel and casino situated in Florida, in the United States of America. This Miami attraction was completed in the year 1999, and opened that same year. It is a nine-story building, with a statue of a young boy from the Miccosukee tribe dominating its front entrance. It has been described as one of the most uncommon resort destinations in the state of Florida due to the contrast between the casino itself and the Native American village that surrounds it and it cost a purported $45 million in order to create. 400 members of the Miccosukee tribe are in charge of operating this destination. The Color of Money is an American drama film that was made in 1986. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese. It is based on a book of the same name by Walter Tevis and is a sequel to the 1971 film The Hustler, also based on a book by Walter Tevis. The screenplay for the The Color of Money was done by Richard Price, though, and apparently with significant contributions from Paul Newman, who starred in the original Hustler and the Color of Money. His c-stars in the film were Tom Cruise, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Helen Shaver, and John Turturro. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese. Continue reading
The Gamblers is a 1970 American drama film. Relatively rare and somewhat unknown, this film was written and directed by Ron Winston. Ron Winston was a talented writer and director and had done some high profile TV series and several feature film by the time he died in 1973 at the age of only 40.
The Gamblers stars Suzy Kendall, Don Gordon and Pierre Olaf, and was shot entirely on location in Dubrovnik, Croatia. At the time the film was made, the whole area was Yugoslavia and the dictator ruling the region at the time, Marshall Tito offered numerous incentives for film to be made in the region in order to promote it. Although The Gamblers was only a moderate budget film, but certainly makes full use of the publicity incentives by showing the truly gorgeous scenery of the region in great detail. Two-up has been popular in Australia for hundreds of years, and is seen by many as part of the nation’s culture and identity. The game’s exact origins are unclear, but it seems likely to have begun in poorer communities who struggled with day-to-day survival. Two-up has come to symbolise the tenacious nature and grit of the Australian people, and was even featured in the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
The game seems to have evolved from Pitch and Toss, which involved throwing one coin into the air and betting on how it would land. It became popular with poor English and Irish citizens, and the convicts that were sent to Australia from those countries, in the 18th century.
